Unveiling the Mysteries of GPT-3: A Deep Dive into Its Responses to Sensitive Topics, Misconceptions, and Controversial Statements

Dec 22, 2023

Large Language Models are those models that are trained on massive amounts of data and can generate human-like text. LLMs are being used in all spheres of life. They are used in translation, classification, question answering, etc. However, some studies have shown concerns about the accuracy and consistency of information generated by these models.

Consequently, the University of Waterloo researchers focused on an early version of ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI. The study assessed the model’s understanding across six categories: facts, conspiracies, controversies, misconceptions, stereotypes, and fiction. They found that GPT-3 can generate incorrect responses, contradict itself, and repeat harmful misinformation. The researchers emphasized a recurring issue in training large language models.

For this study, the researchers gave 1268 statements to GPT-3. They collected these statements from various sources, including conspiracy theory papers, Wikipedia, external links, and the output generated by GPT-3. The statements were presented to the model using four different inquiry templates, each designed to evaluate the model’s response to a given statement. They assessed the effect of prompt language on model responses and studied how the model responded to particular sensitive issues using these four different inquiry templates.

They found that while GPT-3 tends to disagree with blatant conspiracies and stereotypes, it can still not resolve widespread misunderstandings and disputes with common misconceptions and controversies. Also, the study revealed that responses were inconsistent and unreliable, which could potentially result in spreading misinformation. Further, The study showed that GPT-3 agreed with incorrect statements between 4.8% and 26% of the time. One of the study’s lead authors highlighted the model’s sensitivity to slight changes in wording. Even a minor alteration, such as adding the phrase before a statement, could significantly influence GPT-3’s response, leading to inconsistencies and confusion.

To overcome the limitation and improve the credibility of LLMs, researchers suggest implementing rigorous testing processes during the development stages of the. Also, they emphasized that prompts should be crafted before deployment for specific NLP tasks. By doing so, developers can help ensure reliable results and minimize the spread of misinformation through AI-generated texts.

In conclusion, this research underscores the need for caution in deploying large language models like GPT-3. The study shows the challenges associated with these models, emphasizing the importance of refining prompt construction to mitigate misinformation and enhance reliability. As these language models become significant to various applications, addressing their limitations and ensuring responsible use will be crucial for fostering trust in AI systems. The study raises concerns about the trustworthiness of large language models as they need help to differentiate between truth and fiction.
